The History Of Bellydancing
Bellydancing is probably the oldest
form of dance thousands of years old;
it originated in the Middle East and North Africa.
In French, it was once nicknamed"danse du ventre" meaning dance of the stomach hence the poorly translated term Bellydance.
In Arabic, it is known as"Raks Sharqui"
(pronounced Raks Shar-key) means dance
from the east or Oriental dance.
A common name in Arabic is"Beledi"
meaning dance of the people or dance from the country.
Bellydance came to United States at the turn of the 20th century.
Oriental dance started around Turkey, China and Japan.
Women would dance fertility rituals
as well as goddess worship ceremonies.
Only recent history that men were allowed to watch.
Women use to dance while another female was giving birth to
soothe her and remind her to se her ab muscles.
Undulation movements are great to push the baby out of the womb.
Most of the movements are focused on the perlvic and ab area,
this will work to message your internal organs.
In Central America, women used to dance
for means of sexual selection.
The women would dance showing interest of certain mail;
then the man would choose the woman that he desired.
In the Middle East, men were known to have more than one wife;
all the wives would dance to catch their husbands eye.
Young girls in the Near East were often in prearranged marriages;
after the wedding the women would gather and dance.
Ciaro women were considered beautiful if they were fair and fat.
Turshish women would dance behind screens or veils,
so the sultan could only see the figure.
Bellydancing is a term that you use for various styles of dance.
Raks Beledi is done in a long dress with a hip scarf.
Oriental dance is a blend of Egyptian stlye with
Persian, Turkish, and Indian.
Turkish Roma style consists of big skirts
and many turns, while hopping around.
American Tribal started in the 60's in San Francisco.
American Tribal dancers like to wear
various style of attire when dancing.
Goddess dancing uses slow New Age music and veils.
Bellydance is also known as danse orientale.
Modern Egytian style involves a long elaborate dress,
very fluid soft movements; many poses as well.
Egyptian focuses on the lower half of the body
and uses small movement.
Turkish style is more lively and fast paced than the Egyptian style.
Unlike the Egyptian style the Turkish style
is more past paced and bigger movements.
Modern Lebanese fuses together
Egyptian and Turkish styles.
With Lebanese style you wear
high heeled shoes and cabaret style costumes.
American Tribal abandondoned the the glitzy costumes
to find more of the earthy attire.
They usually work in a group,
while they do not use choreography,
if you watch closely you will see they use signals and cues.
Fusion is combining various styles of dance
as well as all of the bellydance styles.
They will also wear pretty much what the like,
but not usually glitzy costumes.
Gypsy Tribes traveled to Egypt and developed Ghawazee.
Ghawazee used props like veils, candles, and swords;
all of which are used today.
